The Toronto Raptors franchise is truly one of the most unique franchises in all of North American sports. Not only is the ‘Raptors’ name unique (although we’re not really sure why Toronto’s team is called the Raptors), but Toronto is of course the only NBA franchise that exists outside of the U.S.
Mix the cool name as well as the location of the team together and it has allowed for some pretty awesome jerseys over the last 25+ years. It kind of seems like they can’t just stick to one jersey for that long of a period of time, but it’s been entertaining to see some really captivating designs and some, let’s just say, not so captivating designs. We’ve seen purple, red, black, white, gold and even blue in several different combinations. So once again we want to know what your favourite is, and you can submit your vote each step of the way. Check out the first-round matchups down below.
There’s a lot of history in this matchup. The inaugural away purple jerseys are of course one of the first Raptors’ uniforms and were worn by the likes of Damon Stoudamire, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady. They were somewhat underappreciated at the time and they have definitely gotten better with age. On the other hand, these slick blue uniforms that were worn during the 2016-17 season were inspired by the Toronto Huskies, which was a team in the Basketball Association of America (BAA) back in 1946. Fun fact: the Toronto Huskies hosted the first game in BAA league history.
The 2018-2019 red ‘North’ jerseys will always have a special place in the history of the Raptors’ franchise for the simple fact that the Raptors won the 2019 NBA Championship while wearing them. As far as all the North jerseys go, these are really as nice as they get and they represent Canada in a pretty cool way. The 2019-20 black and gold ‘City’ edition uniforms are inspired by a couple of cool themes. The script across the chest is a throw back to the inaugural jerseys, while the black and gold OVO-inspired colour scheme has been used since Drake joined the Raptors as a global ambassador.
The inaugural home uniforms have to be one of the favourites to win this tournament. Something about the purple trim and pinstripe detailing frames the original Raptor logo really nicely. Meanwhile, the first thought that comes to mind when looking at the away purple jerseys from 1999-2003 is Vince Carter’s historic performance in the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
The gold OVO-inspired colour scheme and North logo have really brought a breath of fresh air to the Raptors uniforms over the past few years. These ‘City’ edition jerseys were worn in back-to-back seasons and the Raptors looked pretty fresh while playing in them. This is really a debate of white and gold vs black and gold colour blocking.
